Lincoln Highway BUY-WAY Yard Sale Scavenger Hunt Winners Had Fun
(Ohio) — The second Lincoln Highway BUY-WAY Yard Sale Scavenger Hunt
proved to be fun for the three lucky winners this year. August's
multi-state three-day yard sale event attracted scores of thousands of
travelers onto the historic road and into their wallets for a dime or
a dollar here and there, for the highly successful third year.
"The scavenger hunt was a web-based offering for fun and adventure,"
said Mike Hocker, Ohio Lincoln Highway Historic Byway executive
director. "Not only could travelers check out a list of where, when
and what items would be offered during the sale on our website, but we
also listed a dozen little items for them to find, document where they
found them, take a photo and email or send it in as a scavenger hunt
entry."
"We more than doubled our entrants this year. Prizes like overnight
stays in Lincoln Highway hotels, museum passes and restaurant gift
certificates awarded help promote the "things to do" along the road,
which fulfills our organization's mission of economic development
through educating people to the history of the road."
Cherene Nolt of Dalton, Ohio, first place BUY-WAY Scavenger hunt
winner, did all her scavenger hunt and other yard sale shopping within
fifteen miles of home...that's how many yard sales there were.
Second place winners Donna and husband Dale McCaffery are New Yorkers
who also snowbird in Florida, and last year they caught the bug to do
the BUY-WAY using their friends as "home base" in Kensington, Ohio.
This year, with a motor home and a sign on the back warning that it
"STOPS AT ALL YARD SALES" they did it again, planning the "vacation"
in advance. They traversed the eastern and western lengths of Ohio
about a hundred miles in both directions.
Anne Schaefer, third place winner from Elyria, Ohio, said she, her
sister and her husband traveled across a short distance (they were
frustrated because they only got 40 miles due to some intense
shopping) in a van camper, witnessed the August 9th tornado west of
Wooster, and hunkered down there that evening.
Anne noted that everyone hosting sales along the way "were really
nice" making their event more fun. Her husband was out for tools, and
lamented that he didn't find as many as the year before, but she knows
that may change next year--which the family is already planning. Her
husband took vacation especially for the event.
Dates for next year's event is August 7, 8 and 9, 2008. You can find
the OLHHC website and yard sale information updates at
