Post Offices to Do Special Cancellation During BUY-WAY Yard Sale

List of participating locations.

Galion, Ohio -- Through special arrangements with the U.S. Postal Service, all post office locations across all alignments of Ohio's Lincoln Highway will be providing a special pictorial cancellation during the second Annual BUY-WAY Yard Sale this August.

According to the Canton Regional Customer Relations Coordinator, Ann L. Frank, an unprecedented thirty-nine post offices will participate in a cachet cover cancellation to commemorate the Lincoln Highway and its BUY-WAY Yard Sale on both Thursday, August 10 and Friday, August 11 of the yard sale. The service will not be available the last day of the sale, Saturday, August 13.

"Each community will have its own unique cancellation stamp for each day, and this will be used upon request for anyone wanting their regular outgoing mail cancelled that way," Ann said, "and in addition, a beautifully designed commemorative Ohio Lincoln HIghway BUY-WAY Yard Sale envelope will also be available along with one of the new nationally released 'Superlative' 39¢ stamps." This is a longstanding tradition with the Post office, and is called a cachet cover cancellation. It is highly sought after by philatelists and history buffs, alike."

In many communities, postal employees will actually set up a table along the sidewalk on the highway. For example, Dalton's post office has arranged with the local historical society to display old photos of the road through town as well as perform cancellations at a table on the street. Other post offices will simply have the cancellation available inside at the window.

"This new stamp series ties in the theme of the Lincoln HIghway being one of our nation's superlatives, also," remarked Frank, who went on to point out the Highway was America's "first" Coast-to-coast paved road in 1913.

BUY-WAY shoppers will not only be able to collect their favorite finds
along the yard sale, but also can collect all thirty-nine (times two days) of the special cancellations. The cachet covers, or specially cancelled Lincoln HIghway envelopes will also be available by sending a request to the individual post office until September 12, 2006. Collectors are urged to call the post office for prices and details.
