Dalton (On the Highway since 1913) Population: 1,600

Dalton, (the DAL is pronounced like the DAL in DALLAS) was originally comprised of three villages; Middleton, Sharon and Dover. Finally in 1856 it was incorporated as Dalton. Believe it or not, this was the first Ohio town to be bypassed by a superhighway bypass...not the bigger cities of Mansfield or Canton back in the 1950s.

This town is a great example of the original Lincoln Highway slogan, "Main Street Across America" with its tree-lined downtown street.

Dalton had a major fire in 1894 which destroyed almost every building on Main Street.

• By appointment you can visit the Dalton Community Historical Museum, located just East of the center of town. It consists of the Old Eagle Hotel and Tavern, built of logs in 1821. Call the Town Hall at (330) 828-2221.

• The Dalton Chamber of Commerce
• There are two Lincoln Highway concrete posts in the town, although not at their exact original locations. One is located at the intersection of Main St. and Mill St., while the other is a mile further on Main St. At Kohler Road (Sugar Creek Township Road 129) four miles west of town, you will find another concrete post, the second of three posts in Ohio which are at or near their original positions.

• The Sippo Valley Trail (bike trail) connects to the heart of the village park.
• The Village Green Park sports 3 ball fields, playground and picnic area for families, along with century old trees. Located off of Main Street just one block east of Mill Street
